Readers Write: Continuing to serve by showing vets’ plight

The Island Now

We have a Navy veteran named Tommy Zurhellen who has walked across America, raising awareness about the plight of our veterans.

Tommy Zurhellen’s focus is his concern for veteran suicide and the homelessness of veterans. He has walked 2,866 miles for a mission that must be commended. He has raised over $45,000.

Tommy said after his trek, which ended on Friday in Poughkeepsie, “The walk has ended, but the journey is just beginning.”

As a Navy veteran myself of the Vietnam era, who once was homeless and a member of American Legion Post 103, I would like to applaud Tommy Zurhellen for his brave efforts talking to fellow veterans around America.

He has made America aware of the need to help our suffering veterans who gave their full measure of devotion and service to our nation. Now for that Navy veteran Tommy Zurhellen, I proudly salute you.
