Readers Write: Column missed much in NHP

The Island Now

New Hyde Park is our town, and Dr. Ferraro missed a few things in his drive — as described in his article “NHP fights battle against citification,” dated Friday, Dec. 2, that make New Hyde Park our home.
He missed the four elementary schools of the New Hyde Park — Garden City Park School District — where kids are playing outside at recess mid-day, Little League teams are practicing or playing baseball games on the fields in the evenings and on the weekends in the Spring, and the beautiful sounds of the students’ holiday concerts are in the air.  He missed New Hyde Park Memorial High School, bustling with activity every day of the week.
He missed Tully Park and Memorial Park, where families gather for concerts in the summer.
He missed our Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs performing service projects around the town, or holding car washes on the corner of Lakeville Road and Jericho Turnpike.
He missed all of the family owned businesses on Jericho Turnpike between New Hyde Park Road and Lakeville Road, that donate to every Parent Teacher Association event to support our kids.
He missed the Elks Lodge on Lakeville Road, where last Friday night over 80 neighborhood parents gathered for a holiday party, “just because we like each other.”
The days of Lakeside Avenue Thomas Dongan’s mansion are long gone, but I wouldn’t trade our town for the world.
This is our home, where we are raising our kids, with that small town feeling, next to the bright lights of the big city and all that has to offer.
So don’t worry about us, we have all the good will and blessings we need here in New Hyde Park.
