Readers Write: Column crosses line in criticism

The Island Now

I doubt your editorial policy would welcome a letter like this. You probably care about spelling, grammar and word usage.

This writer would seem uneducated or too ignorant to impose on your readership.

However, there is little concern over regular obvious political bias and or intellectual dishonesty.

These lead to deliberate violations of rhetorical “errors” such as over-generalization and exaggeration.

I am referring specifically to the Aug. 4 column by Rubin.

There certainly is enough to criticize President Trump without going well beyond the facts.

If he said something to the effect of not being gentle with arrestees, that is not the same as cheerleading for police brutality.

She claims, without context, that Trump promotes torture and does not indicate that there are differences of opinion on what constitutes torture. (Years ago, the Netherlands blasted classical music under some bridges to drive “undesirables” away from there.)

As an aside, it is interesting that Rubin in the first paragraph invokes “innocent until proven guilty”, but has no problem declaring Trump guilty of obstruction and de-humanization, etc.

Her column headline would be more journalistically appropriate if it said “I am a Trump Hater.”

She could then marshal her selective, distorted events to justify her hatred. Is everyone entitled to his or her own opinion?

I guess so. But if such opinions are to be publicly expressed, my opinion is they should be based on honest considerations.
