Readers Write: Central Nassau’s needs unmet

The Island Now

It is for certain that there are many more concerns for Central Nassau County than are being considered.

Most comments only address individual interests.

It is necessary to stand back and get the total picture or rise above it all for the same purpose.

One consideration is traffic on North-South and East-West thoroughfares, all of which are encumbered.

The big picture includes that from the Cross Island Parkway on the west, there is no other expressway North and South all the way to the Meadowbrook Parkway.

From 495 and the Northern State Parkway, there are no other East-West expressways all the way down to the Southern State Parkway.

Considering how this entire encompassed area is fully developed except for parks, etc.

The only solution is at least three tunnels North-South from Northern Boulevard to the Southern State and three East-West from the Cross Island to the Meadowbrook: all evenly spaced.

Each of these six would need various entrances and exits and connections with the transverse tunnels.

There are no two ways about it.

As I remember, Mineola has five water wells.

Two are out of service and the one on Elm Place needs an air stripper. This requires moving the water department to another location.

I can imagine that there are problems in many other locales.

Yet, there are those that want to keep developing Long Island beyond its capacity.

Their type of selfish interests don’t take into consideration that they are responsible for much of the pollution of the water supply. They also cannot be counted on to be continually ‘cleaning up after themselves.’

For all the things that need to be done on Long Island, among the first steps is that being one of the heaviest taxed counties in the U.S., stringent control of where the tax dollars are going and being wasted has to be brought under control to pay for all of these needs.

Recently I mentioned how Nassau’s sewage system can be repaired economically and paid for with hopefully a modest surcharge on those who actually use the water.

It can’t be more fair than that.

I will be commenting on how other needed things can be done and I am not stupid.
