Readers Write: Area behind preserve in G.N. now a ‘wasteland’

The Island Now

The East end of the Udall’s Pond Wildlife Preserve behind the Main Library in Great Neck has become a wasteland.

The unpaved drainage easement road from Beach Road, going to the pond (a creek) and the Grist Mill, was used for drainage project and was reseeded after that.

During the last four years, no-one has mowed the road.

It used to be done twice every year, and one could walk from the Beach Road-Lawson Lane junction on the East, to the pond, then to the library on one hand and Strathmore on the other.

The Bayview Avenue side on the west has been regularly taken care of as before, but not the east end.

I have contacted the Village of Great Neck, of Kings Point, Nassau County, Town of North Hempstead, various parks departments, those of public works, and the local legislator.

Nobody seems to know anything about the area, and nobody seems to know to whom the land belongs, or who should service it.

After $8 million worth dredging effort to restore the pond and the wildlife, the only access to admire that has been abandoned.

This is an open request to all local and other government agencies to come forward and claim the ownership of and responsibility for the area.
