‘Read-Aloud’ takes on Olympic flare at Hillside

The Island Now

The frigid weather on Thursday, Feb. 27, was just perfect for the students who participated in the fourth annual BLT sponsored Read-Aloud event.

This year’s theme was the Winter Olympics and from the torch to gold medals to Olympic music, the night had it all!  Students arrived at Hillside to be greeted by their “coaches” also known by day as teachers!  They then took part in the opening ceremonies by processing into the gym that was decorated with flags from many countries around the world as well as a torch.

Mrs. Olynk, principal of Hillside Grade, kicked off the Olympic evening by sharing with the students a read-aloud about a boy who never gave up and kept working hard, just like Olympians.  Students then broke up into small groups and worked their “coaches” in various classrooms to listen to a story and create a HGS Winter Olympic Read-Aloud medal.

We want to thank teachers Julie Croshere and Shannon Boland for organizing and sharing their creative talents for this event.  We also want to thank all of the teacher-coaches for their dedication to keep a love for reading alive in our Hillside Grade students.
