Rainstorm causes outages once again

A rainstorm carrying winds with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour early Thursday morning caused power outages throughout the Town of North Hempstead that lingered through the day.

“We had widespread outages in the area,” said Long Island Power Authority spokesman Mark Gross. “We’ve been restoring power all day.”

Gross couldn’t put an exact number on the number of households that lost power. One unconfirmed news report online put the number at 2,500.

Late Thursday afternoon, more than 1,000 North Hempstead households were without power, according to information on LIPA’s Web site.

According to LIPA’s Storm Center data, 254 households in North New Hyde Park were without power as of Thursday at 4 p.m. In Great Neck and Great Neck Estates,129 households were dark, along with 96 households in

Roslyn Heights, 60 houses in East Hills, 30 houses in Garden City Park and 11 houses in East Williston. Five households or fewer had no power in other villages neighboring those areas.

Scattered outages remained in those areas late Friday afternoon and LIPA had posted a notice on its site that additional crews were working to rectify the problems.
