Pumpkin patch returns to Community Church

The Pumpkin Patch has sprung up again at the Community Church of East Williston.

After several years of offering a pumpkin patch, the Community Church of East Williston decided against holding its annual fundraiser last year.

But it’s back this fall with the hope that it will raise $8,000 for the church, according to Stan Becker, president of the church’s board of trustees.

“It’s important for out budget. This is the biggest fundraiser each year,” Becker said. “It’s also good for the morale of the church. It lifts everybody’s spirits.”

Becker said sales of the pumpkins helps pay for the theatrical productions the church’s drama group stages and other church costs

Adults and children were strolling through the rows of pumpkins neatly arranged in bright sunshine on the church’s front lawn as the sale started last Saturday. Apart from purchasing pumpkins, they were also buying cakes and water being sold by the volunteers.

“It’s cute for them to do something,” said Albertson resident Frank LaPinta, watching his two children picking pumpkins. “It’s nice to support the church.”

Lifelong congregation member Edwina Mille said she enjoys the experience of giving service.

“I get satisfaction out of helping my church. It’s good for the spirit,” she said.

Community Church congregation member Elaine Pleines said she likes interacting with people from the church and those perusing the pumpkins.

“It’s a great camaraderie with the congregants. And we meet all the neighbors,” Pleines said.

Congregation member Artie Posillico said the Pumpkin Patch is just a good time for everyone.

“It’s fun. Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year,” he said, adding it also gives him a good feeling to help his church.

Becker said local Boy Scout Troop 245 gave the church a big helping hand on the Friday night before the pumpkins went on sale, unloading 2,000 pumpkins for the patch.

The sale continues daily through Oct. 31, with volunteers manning the patch daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the church, which is located at 45 East Williston Ave. in East Williston.
