Project Independence, the Town of North Hempstead’s “aging in place” initiative, will be hosting a Health Fair on Friday, June 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Port Washington Senior Center.
Town residents 60 and older and their caregivers, family members, and neighbors are all encouraged to attend. The focus of this health fair will be “wellness,” which includes information on how to better manage irregular blood pressure, cardiac awareness, poison control, and diabetes.
Pharmaceutical experts from the North Shore-LIJ Health System will be on hand, along with various other health and human services agencies, local vendors, transportation and taxi companies, and government representatives. In addition to answering questions, they will provide screenings, demonstrations, handouts, and more.
“The Project Independence Health Fair gives seniors a one-stop venue where they can get information on how to help them live healthier and more independently as they age,” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “It’s just one of the ways we are giving back to those who helped make North Hempstead one of the best places to live and retire in America.”
A complimentary, light lunch will be provided by Wild Honey on Main Street in Port Washington, and will be served at 12:30 p.m.
Locally made arts, crafts and baked goods, all prepared by North Hempstead seniors, will also be for sale at the Health Fair.
Participating agencies and partners include: North Shore-LIJ Health System, JASA, Family and Children’s Association, FEGS Health and Human Services, the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation, Delux Transportation for our food shopping and medical transportation program, the Port Washington Fire Department, United Life Line, the Empowering, Assisting and Caring Network,
The Rehabilitation Institute, the Port Washington Library, and G.R.A.S.P. (Grandparent Respite And Support Project).
