President nominates Great Neck resident to post

President Barack Obama announced Wednesday his plans to nominate Great Neck resident Robert Zimmerman to be a member of the National Council on the Humanities, according to a release from the White House.

The Senate confirms each nomination to the 26-seat council, with each term running for six years. The council advises the National Endowment for the Humanities chairman, according to the National Council on the Humanities website.

Zimmerman, a Village of Great Neck Estates resident and a partner in Zimmerman/Edelson Inc., a public relations firm that he co-founded in 1989,  said he could not comment on the appointment because it is still in the confirmation process.

Zimmerman is a member of the board of directors of the Center for an Urban Future and has been a Democratic National Committee member since 2000.

In the past, Zimmerman has been a member of the board of the American Museum of Natural History, the New York State Spending and Government Efficiency Commission, the state Commission on Open Government and the Advisory Committee on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the White House said.

He has also appeared on CNN, Fox News, Fox Business News and MSNBC to discuss public policy, according to the Zimmerman/Edelson website.

Zimmerman, who said he has lived in Great Neck since was about 9 years old,  has a bachelor of arts degree from Brandeis Univeristy and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Fordham University, the White House said.
