Reader’s Write: Postal Service committed to serving well

The Island Now

This responds to the Feb. 28 story in The Island Now titled Residents, Officials Slam NHP Postal Delivery.  The Postal Service shares common ground with local municipalities, businesses and residents to provide safe, reliable service to more than 15,000 customers across New Hyde Park.

A series of winter storms in February meant our daily journeys down New Hyde Park’s streets and sidewalks have been a little slower, a little longer and a lot more challenging than usual.

We want to thank so many of our neighbors who are keeping their sidewalks, staircases and mailboxes clear.

We also appreciate the partnership of your public works team who, like the letter  carrier, are often outside during the harshest part of the stormy days we have seen. We agree – we can do better and we are aggressively reviewing action items that will help us enhance our service to you now and in the future.  This includes hiring staff to help fill our current vacancies.   If you know someone who is interested, we want to hear from you!

No matter what the circumstances, the Postal Service’s mission of affordable service remains the same – to deliver the mail promptly, efficiently, accurately, and to do so in a friendly manner.  Be assured local postal management is actively monitoring daily conditions at the office.

When local customers have a concern, a comment or a compliment, we invite you to call the Postal Service’s toll free Customer Care phone number at 1-800-ASK USPS (800 275-8777).   Every call will be documented, with any trends identified and appropriate action taken to strengthen our service to you.

Some of your readers may still be surprised to learn that the Postal Service does not use tax dollars.   We rely solely on the revenues from postage – one stamp at a time – to support the costs of mail service, including transportation, processing and delivery.   We take stewardship of your stamp dollars seriously and will work to rebuild your confidence, one envelope at a time.
