Port’s Community Chest BBQ festival a success

The Island Now

Every year Alper’s True Value Hardware, located at the corner of Main Street and Irma Avenue in Port Washington, presents a BBQ festival street fair to raise money for the Community Chest of Port Washington, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the residents of Port Washington.   This year’s event — the 10th annual — held on May 20th was the most financially successful ever.

Adam Novick, a fifth generation Alper “produces” the event. He does it all and he does it because he gets the fact that our neighbors and friends are struggling (often silently) and so he pushes for every extra dollar knowing that the more we raise, the more we can help. Also, what people may not understand is that each of the BBQ teams puts in at least 12 hours to prepare, smoke, grill and present food for thousands of Karmacue attendees. It is truly a remarkable display of giving.

So after all the tents were taken down, the awards given and Irma Avenue cleaned up, $10,000 was donated to the Community Chest of Port Washington to help Port residents who are struggling. When we consider all the hard work that is put into Karmacue by Adam, the entire Alper’s family, the bands (Chuck Idol and Hat Trixx), the food vendors (Bagel Schmear, Bareburger, Ralph’s and Yummy Gyro), Soul Shine (who did the crafts) and the volunteers, we are speechless.

The board and staff of the Community Chest of Port Washington say, “Thank You,” with all our hearts to everyone who helped.
