Port Washington resident Scotto to announce run for D.A.

Bill San Antonio

Port Washington resident Michael A. Scotto will announce his candidacy for Nassau County district attorney Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Nassau County Supreme Court building, he announced Friday.

Scotto, a Democrat, is a former counselor in the litigation department at the New York City firm Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. and previously held several positions within the New York County District Attorney’s office, including chief of its Rackets Bureau and deputy chief of its Investigation Division.

He is challenging Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas, of Manhasset, for the party nomination.

Newsday reported earlier this week that Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray (R-Levittown) is also expected to announce her candidacy for Nassau district attorney.

Singas assumed the position in January, following the departure of former District Attorney Kathleen Rice to the House of Representatives.

Because Singas was Rice’s top assistant D.A., and because Gov. Andrew Cuomo did not personally appoint a successor to the position, Singas assumed the role.

According to a media release, Scotto is expected to address the media and detail the reasons for his campaign, the changes he would make as district attorney and the differences between him and his opponents.

Correction: A previous version of this article inaccurately stated Michael A. Scotto is of Counsel in the litigation department at the New York City firm Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. He no longer works at the firm. We regret the error.
