Port Washington native Melissa Hyman is making a return to her roots on Wednesday, July 31, when the Port Washington Public Library hosts “The Moon and You,” a concert featuring the husband-and-wife duo of Hyman on the cello and her husband, Ryan Furstenberg, who plays the guitar and banjo.

Currently residing in Asheville, NC, Hyman grew up in Port Washington, where she first discovered her love of the cello. Her father is a professional violinist and formal music instructor, while her mother is a fan of 60s folk music and loves singing along to all the tunes. Hyman says she has plenty of memories from her childhood in Port Washington, including the days she spent at the library.

“It seems to me that I was [at the library] most days, a comfortable and habitual place, halfway between home and school,” said Hyman in a press release. “I could not be more thrilled for the opportunity to share our music in a place that meant so much to me growing up.”

As for Hyman’s husband, Furstenberg grew up in the eastern North Carolina tobacco fields, where he learned classic country and 70s rock music – first on the harmonica and then the guitar.

The duo form a sound that is warm and inviting, atmospheric and fun. Each of them is a well-developed songwriter with their own unique voice, with songs that range in style from classic to quirky.

The concert will begin at the Port Washington Public Library at 7:30 p.m. All those who wish to attend can do so at no cost, as admission to the concert is free.
