The Nassau County Police Department is currently investigating what it called an “unusual” incident in which a car was vandalized with swastikas while parked at a Great Neck Jewish center last weekend.
Detectives said that sometime between 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 an unidentified person scratched two swastikas and put other various marks onto the side of a 1998 Mercedes Benz, which was left in the parking lot of the Babylonian Jewish Center at 440 Great Neck Road.
The vehicle belongs to an unnamed 39-year-old male, according to a county police department news release.
The investigation into the source of the anti-Semitic graffiti is still ongoing. Police request that anyone with information regarding the incident contact Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
In the past year, four instances of swastikas being drawn in public places have been investigated by county police.
The last incident came in November, when two swastikas were painted on the door of the Congregation Kol Yisreal Achim synagogue at the intersection of Picadilly Road and Middle Neck Road in the Village of Saddle Rock.
In May, an eight-inch by eight-inch swastika was found on a post of a gazebo in a park on Grace Avenue in the Village of Great Neck Plaza, while in October a 16-year-old New Hyde Park resident was arrested for painting a swastika on the sidewalk outside of the Manor Oaks School.
Another swastika was found scratched in the dirt of a softball field at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Williston Park in October as well.
