Phyllis (Salupsky) Mintz, a resident of Commack, New York, died peacefully on August 25, 2019, at Huntington Hospital. She was 90 years old.

She was born in Manhattan on November 3, 1928, to Rebecca and Nathan Salupsky. Phyllis graduated from Straubenmuller Textile High School, graduating two years earlier than her peers. She continued her education at City College of New York for two years.

Phyllis was one of few women in her generation to work in a corporate setting. For most of her career, she worked at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, a top-20 law firm in the U.S., where she worked her way up to the position of purchasing manager.

Phyllis married the love of her life, Leonard Mintz, in 1949. The couple settled in New Hyde Park, New York in the early 1960s, where they raised their two children, Janice and Neil, and their many dogs.

For her entire life, Phyllis had great loyalty to the New York Mets and could be found watching tennis grand slams, no matter what hour of the night. She later enjoyed watching some of the greatest sports franchises of her generation, the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball team and the Golden State Warriors, perhaps a frontrunner.

She also took pride in calling bingo numbers when she was a resident of Farmingdale Villas in Farmingdale, New York, where she served as vice president of the resident association. She was well known for the jokes she would prepare each week for bingo on Thursday night. She also enjoyed playing cards, Rummikub and knitting.

Phyllis was known for her feisty, humorous nature. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Mintz, and her brother, Sydney Sayles. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Small; her son Neil Mintz and his wife Jolie Mintz; as well as four grandchildren, Eric Small, Becca Small, Alyson Mintz and Kenneth Mintz; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Small.

A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Gutterman’s Funeral Home, 175 N. Long Beach Road, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.

Memorial gifts in memory of Phyllis may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or North Shore Animal League of America.
