Photography club features conversation with Katherine Criss

The Island Now

The Photography Club of Long Island will be hosting “How to Edit Art for an Exhibition,” a presentation by fine art photographer, painter, and collagist Katherine Criss, on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Washington Library.

With more than 20 years of experience in the world of art and photography, Criss, a New Hyde Park resident, has had her artwork showcased in a variety of different venues across New York and Long Island.

Her latest work, “Meditation in Paint and Pixels,” included a challenging series of mural-sized abstractions and was featured at the B.J. Spoke Gallery in Hungtington last October.

“Just the act of living inspires and challenges me, flooding my head with questions,” Criss said in a news release. “I work in isolation, using the language of symbols to communicate my visual message. Surrealism allows me to examine subconscious significances of imagery. When successful, I’ve created art that has a clear concept, speaking to viewers without words.”

Criss served as president of the Professional Women Photographers organization for seven years and is presently represented by B.J. Spoke Gallery in Huntington.

In addition to showing her own work in galleries, from 1992-2007, she also curated and produced vintage photography installations featuring the Fashion District and the Fashion Industry in New York City.

The Photography Club of Long Island, formerly known as the Port Washington Camera Club, was founded in 1975 and hosts free monthly programs at the Port Washington Public Library as a community service from September through June each year.
