Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano presented a proclamation to Ruth Shu, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Network volunteer and survivor, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, and proclaimed November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
The dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola was illuminated purple on Nov. 17 in honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day, according to a press release from the Nassau County executive office.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and the seventh most common cause of cancer-related deaths across the world. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 53,070 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016, and 41,780 will die from the disease.
“I’d like to thank Ruth Shu and the members of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for their hard work and for joining us here as we proclaim November Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month,” Mangano said. “The good health and well-being of the residents of Nassau County are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about Pancreatic Cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments.”
