Pair of S. Rock roads to be repaired

Village of Saddle Rock Mayor Dan Levy announced an agreement Tuesday night with engineer Harvey Bienstock to create plans for roadwork on Emerson Drive and Walters Lane.

Levy said during Tuesday’s Village of Saddle Rock Board of Trustees meeting that he walked the “half-mile” worth of streets with Bienstock to evaluate exactly what type of work needs to be done.

“(Bienstock) is going to specify what to do where … which parts need to be dug out, replaced and shaped … what belgium block needs to be replaced and catch basins that need to be raised,” Levy said.

Following the creation of his plans, Bienstock will prepare a bidding document and review it with village officials, before the project is advertised to potential contractors, Levy said.

“When we get the results, Mr. Bienstock will help us decide which vendor to select,” the mayor said.

Beinstock will also oversee the project until its completion, Levy said.

The price for Bienstock’s work is normally 10 percent of the job, which would amount to around $20,000, Levy said.

The current price of the project is estimated at $3,000, Levy said.

“If there is a change, the village will pay $100 for the project engineer and $70 for a draftsman,” Levy said.

The village also has a grant that Levy is trying to incorporate into the project to work on one of the catch basins on Emerson Drive.

“If we can get that done, that’s another $28,000 in our pocket,” Levy said.

The village was going to do work on Whitman Road this year, however due to current construction, Levy said he decided to defer that job until the beginning of the summer of 2013.

That project could include up to two additional roads, depending on the amount of funding the village has available, Levy said.

Village resident Sasha Masri asked if the roads being worked on are “flood prone.”

Levy said on Emerson Drive there is “a huge amount of water running. It’s worn out.”

Levy said the gullies on the south side of Emerson are dug out.

After consulting with Village of Great Neck Estate Mayor David Fox, whose village has worked with Bienstock in the past, Levy said he is confident in the engineer’s ability to complete Saddle Rock’s roadwork.

“He’s very well recommended,” Levy said of Bienstock. “I’ve had multiple meetings with the trustee in Great Neck Estates and the mayor. They’ve all praised him.”
