Editorial: Ouch!

The Island Now

This will probably not come as a surprise. According to a report released last week by the Tax Policy Center, residents of Nassau County pay on average the second highest property taxes in the nation, second only to Westchester County.

Homeowners here pay an average annual property tax of $9,080. That’s only slightly behind Westchester where residents pay on average $9,647 a year in property taxes. Bergen County, N.J. came in third with $8,893.

To put this in perspective, according to CNNMoney, 60 percent of counties in the nation have average annual property taxes that range between $500 and $1500. You’re paying about 10 times more than the average homeowner in America.

Neither report takes into account the value of the homes or the average income of homeowners nor the quality of the services provided.

Nonetheless it should serve as a reminder to our elected officials to make sure that this money is used wisely.
