Old Westbury OKs gas station revamp

After a months-long review process that required multiple public hearings and revisions to site plans, the Village of Old Westbury Board of Trustees on Monday approved a special-use permit for the reconfiguration of an Exxon Mobil gas station owned by Bolla Operating L.I. Corp.

“The station has been here before us on numerous occasions and gone through numerous modifications,” said Village of Old Westbury Deputy Mayor Michael Wolf, who led the meeting in the absence of Mayor Fred Carillo and Trustee Harvey Simpson. “He has been very cooperative with the board in producing a station that the board, the public and the owner agree is the best station for that particular station.”

David Altman of Brown and Altman LLP reviewed some of the changes Bolla has made to their application in the last few months, including a decrease from 16 to 12 fueling pumps, the limitation of fuel delivery to midnight and 6 a.m. and the addition of a natural gas generator to be used in case of emergency.

Zach Collins of High Point Engineering spoke about the architectural details of the site plan, which included a “fieldstone finish” to the exterior of the station’s proposed convenience store as previously recommended by Carillo.

The board’s approval is subject to further review of the sign that will be placed at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Glen Cove Road, but questions about the sign did not deter the permit’s approval.

Collins said the sign on the corner would be 19.25 feet high and feature the Exxon Mobil and Bolla logos as well as LED lights displaying gas prices.

When asked by Trustee Elizabeth Greenberg how the sign’s proposed size compares to the one currently at the location, Collins said it would be slightly larger and taller than the existing sign.

“We’re really not in complete agreement on the sign, but on the other hand we want to get you guys going,” Wolf said.

Bolla officials will next bring their plans before the village’s board of zoning appeals and architectural review board to obtain needed variances to accommodate the proposed convenience store. The site plan calls for the store to be located closer to the lot line than the village code allows.
