Obese people could overcrowd life boats

The Island Now

We just returned from an ocean going cruise on a new super-ship. There was a small collision when we were tied up at the dock. The other ship got loose!

Our ship had 26 lifeboats with a capacity of 150 each, for about 3,500 passengers and 1,100 crew. Total of about 4,600 people. Before you do the math let me tell you that about 50 percent of the people should be considered obese.

Most would require two seats on the lifeboat.

Someone at the Maritime academy should recalculate the need for additional places on lifeboats entering American waters. The cruise line says adequate space is provided.

Please do not calculate seating capacity based on the cadets size, but on the actual requirements for the average ship (good food, obese people).

Answer capacity = 3900
