Obamacare protects many

The Island Now

I don’t want to prolong the discussion about who killed the individuals who suffered the consequences of a lack of health coverage.

My only point was that if we had had universal coverage when these sad events occurred, loss of a job would not have meant a loss of health care coverage.

Unemployment, when the law is fully implemented, will not end coverage. And ultimately, as Obamacare matures and is modified as problems are corrected, its advantages will be understood and enjoyed. The greatest improvement will come when it eliminates the problems involved in dealing with the middlemen, the profit-making private insurers, and it becomes a right and not a business.

As to freedom of religion, the only point I was making is that universal coverage means that scientifically approved health needs will be attended to impartially; care that is regarded as necessary cannot be denied because of someone else’s interpretation of what services are acceptable. No one is making anyone use services that any individual does not want for himself. No one is telling you what to think, which is, after all,  the essence of freedom of religion.

As to (letter writer) Dr. Morris’ service to his community, based on his care for the least of us, I agree that it is admirable. I was referring to the attitude that cannot extend compassion, in general, to the need to work together as a nation, to find a solution for those we do not know but also suffer.

I can only say, in jest, that I am not hurt by your using my name so much, as long as you spell it correctly.
