Michael Dowling, the president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, has been named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of the nation’s top 100 health care leaders for the eighth straight year.

The trade publication named Dowling, a resident of Northport, as the top hospital executive on Long Island as part of its 13th annual list. He was nominated from more than 15,000 submissions from Modern Healthcare readers.

“I’m honored to be regarded as an influential contributor to the health care profession, particularly at a time of unprecedented change within our industry,” Dowling said.

President Barack Obama topped the list, which included doctors, health care executives, insurance providers and politicians.

The nomination process ran from March 17-April 18.

According to a news release from Modern Healthcare, reader votes and editor rankings contributed to the final list.

Dowling was named the health system’s president and chief executive officer in January 2002, after serving as its executive vice president and chief operating officer.

He joined the health system in 1995 after 12 years as the state’s director of health, education and human services and as a deputy secretary to the governor.

He also served as commissioner of the state Department of Social Services.
