North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Town Clerk Wayne Wink, Town Council Member Veronica Lurvey, and Town Council Member Mariann Dalimonte recently attended the first showing of the Spinney Hill Historic Quilt at the Manhasset/Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council on Feb. 2.
The quilt depicts the growth of the Spinney Hill community in Great Neck through images painted by local artist Raisy Derzie.
The $2,000 project was funded by a $50,000 grant awarded to the Town of North Hempstead by the National Park Service to cultivate and preserve its residents’ history with the Civil Rights movement.
The quilt project was conceived and organized by Barbara Masry, researched by Ruth Freeman, Winnie Fant, and Leslie Arluck; and stitched together by Karen Harry. Photos were taken by Mack Bradley. Other contributions were made by Naomi Penner, Barbara Williams, Cheryl Levitan and Christy Orquera.
The quilt is currently on display at the Manhasset Great Neck EOC, and will also be displayed at the Great Neck Library and Town Hall in Manhasset in the coming months.
