No vacation for EWSD repairs

From the outside, all appears quiet at the schools in the East Williston School District

But inside crews have been busying working to meet a September deadline on more than $350,000 worth of repairs and upgrades at the district’s buildings.

Most of the work is being done at the Willets Road School, where the science lab is in the process of being upgraded at a cost of  $128,000, according to Nicholas Fusco, director of school facilities and operations for the East Williston School District.

Fusco said minor brick repointing and masonry repair is also underway at a cost of $40,840 and repair of asphalt parking lot areas and concrete walkways is also being done at a cost of $40,120.

Installation of two hallway TV monitors and three water coolers in Willets Road School, funded by PTO donations, are already in place, Fusco said.

Fusco said repairs are also underway to the asphalt parking lot and drywell and patching repairs at the North Side School at a cost of $73,160.

Meanwhile, he said, repair of concrete sidewalks at The Wheatley School is being done at a cost of $141,600.

Fusco said interior work at Wheatley, including repair of the wood floor in the gymnasium for $30,680 and an upgrade in the public announcement system for $17,700, awaits the conclusion of the school district’s summer recreation program in the high school.

“I’m comfortable that we’ll be ready for school to be open in September,” Fusco said.

He said things are “pretty much on schedule” for all the repair and upgrade projects being funded largely from a repair reserve of $357,304.

Fusco said he’s still awaiting quotes for putting a new roof on the North Side School. And he’s awaiting an installation date from the contractor upgrading the public address systems at Wheatley and the Willets Road School, a $9,204 estimated cost.

“We have a lot of projects going. A lot of this is necessary for health and safety issues,” Fusco said.
