Readers Write: NHP won’t roll over in bid for dog park

The Island Now

Dog run or dog park, whatever it is called, New Hyde Park is in desperate need of a dog facility.

As numbers can be deceiving, allow me to present a better representation of the density of people to dogs in our area.

New Hyde Park has the highest concentration of dog ownership per capita in the Town of North Hempstead.

With a population of 9,722, one in 15 people own a dog. Compare that to Port Washington (population 15,846) whose ownership ratio is one to 18.5.

Also, the average lot size in Port Washington is much greater so dogs can exercise without owners having to travel.

This is not about pitting one area against another. There is no doubt that the town needs dog runs for our four-legged friends and there should be more than one to accommodate this necessity.

Port Washington already has access to the dog run at Nassau’s Christopher Morley Park.

After two and a half years the town has only managed to spend 20 percent of the grant for a study that is a political cover for the moving of the suggested dog run from Tully Park.

It took the resources of a Newsday reporter to reveal the conclusions of the study due to the lack of transparency on the part of the town and council people involved.

If you are a dog owner in the Tully Park area please contact either councilmembers Lee Seeman or Angelo Ferrara. This is an issue that will definitely go beyond the November elections.
