New Hyde Park resident Nora Murphy decided to take one more shot at a $10,000 A Week for Life scratch-off game on Friday, Sept. 13 and made it an extraordinarily lucky day as she won $10 million.

“It feels awesome. It’s an amazing situation to be in. I’ve got a lot to do,” Murphy said while receiving the traditional oversized check at a press conference last Thursday.

Murphy, who acknowledged playing the Lottery frequently, said she was doing her laundry in a New Hyde Park laundromat on the Friday she purchased the winning ticket.

Following her normal routine, she said, she walked over to Lakeville Pharmacy at 749 Hillside Avenue to buy some Lottery tickets. She scratched a few tickets and hit one small winner so she decided to buy one final ticket.

“I scratched a few tickets and won $20, so I decided to buy one final ticket, and that ended up being the winner!” she said.

Murphy said she was “shocked” when she realized she hit the jackpot after scratching her ticket in the pharmacy.

Murphy said she signed her winning ticket right away and then ran back over to the laundromat to put her laundry in the dryer. She then immediately drove to the Lottery’s Garden City Customer Service Center to claim her prize, she said.

Asked what her plans are for her Lottery winnings, Miurphy said, “I have a lot of friends in Ireland, so I want to make a trip there to see them. After that, I’ll think about my future plans.”

Murphy said she bought the Lottery’s $10,000 A Week For Life scratch-off game because it was a new game that allowed her to enter the Win for Life Sweepstakes.

Murphy, who is New York State’s 107th Lottery millionaire in 2013, said she will receive her Lottery prize in one lump sum totaling $5,090,237 after required withholdings.
