NHP Express rides sweep into first

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Express boys 11U travel baseball team swept a doubleheader from Nex Gen to move to 8-0 on the season, first place in the NJBL league.

In game 1 Connor Jacoby pitched five stellar innings to pick up the win and Paul Orbon closed the game in the 6th. The Express offense was on fire all day. Tyrell Robinson hit the first pitch of the game up the middle then went from 1st to 3rd on a sac bunt before scoring on a single by Orbon.

Mike Lisojo and Adrian Puran followed with singles to plate two more runs. In the third inning Robinson was on again, stole second and scored on a line drive single up the middle by 2nd basemen Tommy Donnelly. Donnelly went 4 for 4 on the day with four RBI singles and started an impressive triple play. Donnelly snared a ground ball up the middle, stepped on 2nd and fired to first for a double play but the runner from 2nd base tried to score on the play and Lisojo, playing first, fired a strike to catcher Nick Duras who applied the tag for a triple play. Express took control of game 1 in the 3rd when Joe Tomich and Timmy Brendel hit back to back triples.

In game 2 Nick Duras pitched a complete game for the win as NHP moved their record to 8-0 on the season. Will Cook had a terrific game with a few hits, a running catch in right field and a heads-up running play to score on an infield ground out. Andrew Visceglia had a solid all around game in the outfield for Express as well.

In baseball the old saying is pitching wins, the Express has plenty of pitching, but this team can hit and defend too. The team has adjusted quickly to the longer bases, 75 feet, and the new mound distance. The NHP Express boys will compete in the Memorial Day East Meadow Baseball Tournament.
