The New Hyde Park Village Board is considering a $2 million project to repair 1 3/4 miles of roads next spring in the latest phase of the village’s ongoing road repair program.

At Tuesday night’s village board meeting, Village of New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro said the board had received an estimate from consulting engineers Dvirka & Bartilucci of $142,500 to design the project and $1.7 million for the actual repairs. The repairs would be subject to bid if approved.

“This would be a $2 million dollar project,” Lofaro said.

He said the board would probably issue a $2 million bond over 20 years to finance the work.

Lofaro said he is facing a “challenge about which road to choose over another.”

“The problem is the money is going to need to be spent at some point,” he said.

Lofaro said state Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) had also approached the village with an offer to help secure an unspecified amount of state funds through a grant for capital projects in the village.

Lofaro said among the projects that the village board is considering are a gas-powered electric generator for Village Hall, replacement of walkways around the perimeter of Memorial Park, the resurfacing of basketball courts at Memorial Park, the replacement of  the Department of Public Works storage facility, the creation of a children’s recreation room in the Village Hall basement,  the repainting of the eaves on Village Hall and drainage improvements in the dugouts at Nuzzi Field.

“It’s a shell of a document. A lot of the meat needs to be put in it,” Lofaro said.

Village Trustee Lawrence Montreuil asked whether the board should seek community input on the projects to be proposed.

But when village Trustee Donna Squicciarino asked what the time frame for submitting the prospective projects is, Lofaro answered, “Like yesterday.”

“I think we should give them a list and let them decide,” Lofaro said.

In other developments:

• The village board approved a two-year contract for Con-Kel Landscaping to trim trees in the village with an option for a third year. Lofaro said the cost of the work would depend on the amount of work that needs to be done  by Con-Kel.

• The board approved a special-use permit for Saf-T-Swim to create build a pool in a vacant commercial building at 1 Jericho Turnpike for swimming lessons.

In a hearing before the  board last month, Kenneth Hazen, district manager of Saf-T-Swim on Long Island said the company specializes in introductory swimming lessons to children five years old and younger. The proposed facility would offer programs of six weekly half-hour classes.

• The board also approved the application for the Step By Step dance school to move from its current location at 613 Jericho Turnpike to a building across the street at 800B Jericho Turnpike.
