The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Bluedevils 15U remain in first place with a week to go in the regular season with a sweep over the Long Island Hawks, 10-0 and 8-1.

In game one, Kyle Cajigas pitched five innings of no-hit ball while striking out seven for the win. The Bluedevils jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning with Dylan Savarese and Ray Close started the inning off with back-to-back walks and Cajigas delivering the first run with a single to center field.

After Cajigas stole second, Liam Gallagher delivered the next two runs with a line shot to right. John Hayes followed with another walk and Anthony Pomara finished the scoring by driving in Gallagher and Hayes for the 5-0 lead.

The Bluedevils added a run in the second with Brandon LaFroscia scoring from third on a bunt single by Savarese.

The game came to an end in the bottom of the fifth, when Doug Obidienzo walked, Matt Gorman singled and LaFroscia reached on an error to load the bases. Savarese drove home his third run with a bases-loaded walk to set the stage for Cajigas, who drove a pitch to the deepest part of the park to drive in all three runs for the final score of 10-0.

In game two, John Hayes matched zeros with the opposing pitcher until the Bluedevils broke out in the top in half of the fourth. Ray Close walked, stole second base and was sacrificed to third by Savarese. Following a strikeout, Cajigas delivered a two-out hit for a 1-0 lead.

The Bluedevils added some cushion in the sixth when Niko Rullo and Doug Obidienzo hit back-to-back singles and  Matt Gorman drilled a pitch over the center fielder’s head for a two-run triple.  Close walked and Savarese drove home Gorman on a fielder’s choice to set the stage for Mike Thornton, who hit a towering home run to right to complete the scoring.

The Bluedevils added some more runs in the seventh when LaFroscia tripled, John Hayes walked, Pomara reached on a bunt single and Niko Rullo tripled in all three runs for the winning margin of 8-1.

John Hayes pitched six solid innings for the win, giving up one run, three hits and striking out six. Liam Gallagher came on in the seventh to close out the win for the Bluedevils, who still stand in first place with a record of 18-4.
