Newest Eagle Scouts in Williston Park

The Island Now

Boy Scouts of America Troop 201 celebrated their newest Eagle Scouts on Sunday, Jan. 6 at the American Legion Post 144 in Williston Park. Michael Marcy, Jordan Chin, and Nicolas Ryan became the 79th, 80th, and 81st Scouts from Troop 201 to reach the highest rank of Eagle.

During the Court of Honor ceremony, the Eagle Scouts received their BSA Eagle Scout certificates along with proclamations from various community leaders such as Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Town Clerk Wayne Wink and Councilman Peter Zuckerman.

Nassau County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum attended, as did New York state Assemblyman Tony D’Urso and Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar. Herricks Board of Education Superintendent Fino Celano was joined by Board President Juleigh Chin, mother of Eagle Scout honoree Jordan Chin, who gave a personal speech honoring the Scouts and their families. Other esteemed guests included representatives from the American Legion, Albertson Hook and Ladder, the Rotary Club, and Scout Leaders from the Theodore Roosevelt District Council.

The three Eagle Scout honorees grew up in scouting together, starting as Tiger Cub Scouts at Denton Ave School when they were all in first grade together. Each of the Eagle Scouts worked on Eagle Projects where the primary purpose is to demonstrate leadership while significantly benefitting a community organization.

Marcy’s project benefactor was the Knights of Columbus in Mineola where he led the Scouts in painting the party hall and building a literature rack for the front entry. Chin worked with the Albertson Herricks Little League where he started his love of baseball as a young child. He overhauled and renovated two dilapidated storage rooms in the basement of the Herricks Community Center. Ryan worked with Cathedral of the Incarnation where he built pedestals and stands and also put together an impressive museum exhibit for the church.

Troop 201 was first chartered in 1973. For over 45 years it has continued to serve the Albertson, Searingtown, Williston Park, East Williston and New Hyde Park areas including the Herricks and East Williston School Districts.

On Sunday, March 24, Troop 201 will hold its Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Albertson Hook and Ladder Firehouse on IU Willets Rd from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Troop’s High Adventure Trip to Philmont, N.M. and other scouting initiatives.
