New program begins for gifted, talented

The Island Now

A new Manhasset Gifted and Talented program, “Manhasset Kids Question Everything!” is opening this fall with four sessions headed by Manhasset district’s science teacher Michael O’Brien.

This objective but humorous look at theories and investigative practices uses phenomena like Big Foot and man-made killer viruses to help tweens and teens question everything. The participants view episodes of “Joe Rogan Questions Everything” then the kids start talking about the unorthodox and strange things that most people don’t believe exist.

“This is an exciting program for kids. If they enjoy watching videos and learning about science they will have a great time,” Manhasset SEPTA Gifted and Talented Programming Director Joanne Thalheimer says.

What do scientists, educators, and eyewitnesses have to say about the phenomena? What methods and theories are there about it? How far will people go to prove the existence of the unexplainable? What various types of practices, scientific or just plain daring are used to understand the phenomena? These are just some of the questions posed to participants as they examine different topics each week.

Manhasset SEPTA is opening the program to participants in 7th grade and up. Email ManhassetSEPTA@gmail.com to find out about the specific episodes to be viewed so parents can decide if the program is a good fit for their child.

The program is held on Tuesday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Manhasset Public Library Garden Room on the third floor. Four sessions are scheduled starting Nov 26 and running until Dec 17. The program is free but registration is required.
