The New Hyde Park Board of Trustees voted on Thursday to tighten restrictions on door-to-door and other types of solicitations.
Village Attorney Ben Truncale explained that federal courts have ruled that flat prohibitions on all types of solicitations are unconstitutional.
However, Truncale added that the courts have ruled that some changes to existing laws can be enacted that are regarded by the courts as reasonable.
Some regulations that have been upheld by the courts are prohibition of solicitations on Sundays and banning solicitations or operation of a commercial cart or van within 200 feet of a public or private school. The board added these restrictions to the village code.
Also, no sales may be attempted at a private residence that displays a sign in the window that states “No soliciting,” and anyone knocking on a door to sell or promote a product or cause must clearly state his or her purpose.
Also at the meeting, Mayor Christopher Devane announced that the village tree lighting will be on Nov. 27 in Marcus Christ Hall at 3 p.m.
