Four New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District students have been accepted into the mathematics program at the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury.
The students are: Abel George, a fifth grader at New Hyde Park Road School; Natalie Lee, a fifth grader at Hillside Grade School; Sameer Salehin, a sixth grader at Hillside Grade School and Emma Stakhov, a fourth grader at Manor Oaks School.
They will begin classes in September when they will spend 60 hours in class and on related outside projects. The four students will learn about mathematical topics such as algebra, geometry and number theory, as well as others not included in the standard courses of study, like problem-solving applied to probability, theory of finite differences and mass point geometry. Additionally, selected applications of mathematics taken from science and engineering are presented and discussed.
Each year, over 600 students are nominated on Long Island for 87 available spots in the program. Selection by the Institute implies that a student is among the top 1/10 of 1% of all students in mathematics on Long Island in his or her grade. Acceptance is based on three criteria: an entrance exam, a recommendation from the student’s math teacher and a school transcript or report card.
