Each year, FIRST Lego League Jr. presents a new and exciting challenge aimed at igniting children’s creativity. For 2019-2020, that theme was “Boomtown Build,” in which students explored the growing needs and challenges of the people in our community. Teams helped to imagine and create a building that solves a problem and makes life easier, happier and more connected for the people that use it.

While students researched these questions, they also designed and created Lego models of cities. Students presented their research and creation model at Mineola High School, along with 35 other Lego League Jr. teams from around Long Island.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park team was presented with the Innovative Model Award, which is presented to a team that is able to “display their innovation and creativity through their Lego model,” according to the expo’s judging criteria.

The district’s Manor Oaks-based team represented the district and was accompanied by Assistant Principal Diana Buffa and Lego League Jr. Coach Lara Holzkamp, who also teaches coding in the district.
