New Hyde Park firefighters to host fundraiser

The New Hyde Park Fire Department is lending a hand to wounded veterans this weekend.

Firefighters are hosting a fundraiser dinner and auction Saturday to benefit Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, an initiative fire departments across the county started in 2004 to help veterans injured in battle get back on their feet.

“It is that willingness of our service men and women to go into harm’s way that provides the driving force behind the extraordinary steps taken when one of them falls,” New Hyde Park firefighter Ed Powers said in a statement.

All proceeds from the $30 tickets to the event will go toward Operation Wounded Warrior’s next trip to military hospitals in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., where they will deliver cards and gifts such as clothes, DVDs and children’s toys to recovering veterans.

In December, three groups of firefighters will travel to the Fort Bragg Army base near Fayetteville, North Carolina, the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, N.C., and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington.

The Nov. 7 event at the New Hyde Park Fire Department’s headquarters, located at 1555 Jericho Turnpike, will feature food from the New Hyde Park Diner, live and Chinese auctions and live music.

“(New Hyde Park Fire) Department members are calling upon the wonderful people of New Hyde Park and beyond to bring a bit of sunshine to the bedsides of our wounded service men and women,” Powers said in a statement.
