NBA’s Nate Robinson to host basketball clinics

The Island Now

NBA star Nate Robinson will be conducting two three-hour basketball clinics at the North Hempstead’s “Yes We Can” Community Center on Friday, Aug. 2. Robinson will train children ages nine to 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and children ages 13-18 will be trained from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Robinson, a former New York Knick, currently with the Chicago Bulls, has played in the NBA for eight years and is a three-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion.

“This is a unique opportunity for young athletes to have a world-class basketball player as their trainer,” Town of North Hempstead Town Supervisor Kaiman said. “This would not be possible without having a state-of-the-art facility like the ‘Yes We Can’ Center right here in North Hempstead.”

Town Councilwoman Viviana Russell said, “It is so exciting for the children of our community to be able to learn from a star professional athlete so close to home. I am proud to welcome Mr. Robinson into our Town and our Community Center.”

Nassau County Legislator Robert Troiano, who also represents this district  and was instrumental in the creation of the “Yes We Can” Center, said, “This is another example of the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center bringing incredible opportunities to the children of this community that previously would not have been available.”

This is not the first-time an NBA player has visited the “Yes We Can” Center.  Former New York Knick Marcus Camby was a special guest at the grand opening of the facility last September.

The 60,000 square foot “Yes We Can” Community Center is located at 141 Garden Street in Westbury. The facility has two NBA-sized basketball courts where the clinic will take place. Other features of the center include a fitness center, internet café, computer rooms, community meeting rooms, senior and teen lounges and more.

The tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4 at 9:00 a.m. This tournament is open to ages eight through adult and includes a three game minimum for each player. Teams can qualify for the Hoop it Up Nationals in Washington, DC on Labor Day weekend.

‘Hoop it Up’ is the official North American sanctioned qualifying tournament for USA Basketball and the FIBA World Championships. Over 500,000 athletes have participated since its inception in 1989.
