National Night Out comes to Westbury

The annual crime and drug prevention rally, “National Night Out,” is coming back to Westbury on August 6. The program promotes neighborhood anti-crime efforts, crime and drug-prevention awareness, and police-community partnerships.

“’National Night Out’ is not only an occasion aimed at supporting local anti-crime, but it is also an opportunity to come together and celebrate a safe and healthy community,” said town Supervisor Jon Kaiman.

Introduced in 1984, “National Night Out: America’s Night Out Against Crime,” was the brainchild of National Association of Town Watch Executive Director Matt A. Peskin. The program is sponsored by the Department of Justice with support from a host local organizations, such as the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center and the New Cassel/Westbury Community-wide Partnership. This event will be New Cassel’s 30th and will feature music, dancing, refreshments, arts and crafts, raffles, health screenings, giveaways, and much more.

“’National Night Out’ is an opportunity for the community to come together as one to say, ‘we don’t want drugs and crime in our neighborhood.’ We are a diverse community, and by working as one, we can strengthen our neighborhood spirit to not only protect our quality of life, but enhance it,” said Councilwoman Viviana Russell, a longtime New Cassel resident

The event will be held at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park, located at Broadway and Railroad Street in Westbury. The parade starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army on 992 Prospect Avenue in Westbury, and the festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. in the park.
