Nassau Coliseum to host ‘Idol’ auditions

Do you think you have what it takes to be an American Idol?

Long Islanders will have the opportunity to answer that question and show off their singing abilities when the American Idol judges come to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday, July 23 to find contestants to compete on the show.

Men, women and children ages 15 to 28 can audition for the singing competition show, which has been on the air since 2002.

Wristbands for auditioners will be handed outside the coliseum, located at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, at about 7 a.m., according to the show’s website. People auditioning for the show will not be allowed to camp outside the coliseum prior to 7 a.m.

American Idol officials will be providing free shuttle buses from the Westbury Long Island Rail Road Station, located at 1 Post Avenue, starting at 5:30 a.m.

Judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. will judge the singers during the pre-taped auditions to determine which contestants will go on to the show’s next round in Los Angeles. The show picks 10 to 60 contestants from each city, according to the show’s website.

The show’s judges then pick 24 contestants – 12 men and 12 women – to move on to the live shows where votes from TV viewers which contestants move on and which contestants are eliminated from the show.

The winner of the contest is guaranteed a contract with a major record label.

Past winners of the competition include Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood,  Jordin Sparks,  Phillip Phillips and last season’s winner Caleb Johnson.
