Models sought for ‘Trashion Show’

The Island Now

One of the newest programs in the Town of North Hempstead’s collection of environmental initiatives, the “Trashion Show,” will take center stage for an encore at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury on Jan. 14. The town is now accepting submissions from young creative students to be part of this year’s event.

Designed to heighten awareness among young people about becoming stewards of the environment, the Trashion show invites students in the nine school districts participating in the School Recycling program to showcase apparel and accessories they design and create completely from recyclable material or any material that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

“The Trashion Show provides students with the ability to express their creativity while teaching them the importance of protecting our environment,” said Interim Town Supervisor John Riordan. “Education about sustainability at a young age will encourage them to become protectors of the environment and pass along the habit to the generation after them.”

Work being submitted to the show must be completed and delivered to 802 West Shore Road, Port Washington by Jan. 10.

Pieces from the show will be displayed at the gallery at the “Yes We Can” Community Center and at the New York State Capitol in Albany in March.
