Members of the Mineola Fire Department quickly extinguished a car fire that broke out on First Street near Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola early Sunday morning.

Mineola Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Clark said the fire call was received at approximately 7:30 a.m. and the fire department’s Engine No. 1 was on the scene within minutes.

“I was the first to get on the scene and the engine compartment was fully engulfed in flames,” Clark said.

He said members of Engine Co. 2, which subsequently arrived on the scene, pried the hood open. Members of Engine No. 1 put out the fire approximately one minute later, Clark said.

“The guys acted fast and knocked the fire down,” he said.

Clark said the cause of the fire was undetermined. He said it could have been the result of a gas leak or an electrical malfunction.

“We don’t know what the cause was. We don’t suspect foul play,” Clark said.

He said members of the Nassau County Police Department were trying to track down the owner, a New Cassell resident, when the fire department volunteers left the scene.
