Merillon Sharks take bite out of Bellmore

The bats were busy in Bellmore on Sunday and when the dust cleared the Merillon Sharks had a 9-8 win over Bellmore Heat in a six-inning 12-hit game. 

The Merillon Shark’s Matty Heimowitz showed his talents on both sides of the diamond with a strong game on the hill and at the plate. Matty led Merillon’s offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game, scoring three runs with one RBI.  Matty also looked sharp on the mound, allowing Bellmore just one hit and no earned runs, while giving up just one walk and striking out three during his two innings of work.

The top of the first saw Bellmore take an early lead, 3-0.  It didn’t take long for Merillon to answer as they scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Sharks scored on a bases-loaded walk by Anthony Agerenza, a two-run single by Jimmy Weedon, and a ground out RBI by Garrett Roth. The game was back-and-forth heading into the late innings, with seven lead changes. But Merillon took the lead and held on for the victory. A bases loaded walk scored Kenny Hirschfeld to give Merillon the lead for good.

Luke Notine had a great day at the play with two walks, a hit and a run scored. 

 Merillon Sharks 9U 7, Ayosset Braves 1. The Merillon Sharks took down the Syosset Braves, 7-1, at Herricks Ballfield after slamming the Syosset Braves with four runs in the fifth inning.

 Kenny Hirschfeld had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits. He tripled in the second and fourth innings and singled in the fifth inning. James Prado showed why he is the lead-off hitter, stealing two bases on first pitches. 

The Syosset Braves’ lineup had no answer for Ryan Wasserman, managing just one hit off of Ryan, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during his two innings of work.

 The bottom of the second saw Merillon take an early lead, 1-0. But the Sharks caught fire after Kenny tripled. Then Erik Lyngstad-Hughes singled, scoring Kenny.

The game was never in doubt after the third, as Merillon scored one run on an RBI double by Ryan. David Reed was solid behind the plate helping to hold the Braves to a single run. 

Merillon Sharks 9U 12,  Garden City A’s 4. The Merillon Sharks refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against the Garden City A’s, recording a 12-4 victory at Herricks Field.

 Seven runs in the first three innings allowed the Sharks to put the game away early.  An error, a two-run single by Garrett Roth, and a two-run error during the first inning, and an RBI single by Brendan Cooper in the second inning helped the Merillon Sharks put some runs on the board early.

Anthony Agerenza led the Shark’s offensive threat, as he got on base three times in the game. He scored three runs and had one RBI, with a double in the fifth inning.

Merillon answered Garden City A’s’ top inning with two runs of its own in the fourth, scoring on a groundout by Jimmy Weedon and a walk by Anthony Vella.

The Sharks tacked on another three runs in the fifth with Anthony A’s double, scoring Erik Lyngstad-Hughes to start the inning.
