Merillon Sharks best Port for championship

The Merillon 10U Sharks jumped out to an early lead over the Port Washington Legends and captured a 9-3 victory on Sunday in the championshipgame of the East Meadow Slugfest Tournament.

The game was decided early as the Sharks exerted its will with nine runs in the first three innings.  

The Sharks managed to put up three runs in the first inning with an RBI ground out by Kenny Hirschfeld, adding two more run on errors.  

Pitcher Ryan Wasserman shut down the Legends in order the first two innings, while the Sharks put up four more runs in the second inning thanks to a based-oaded walk by Wasserman followed by a booming double by Matty Heimowitz that cleared the bases.  

After the Legends managed to put up two runs, the Sharks responded in kind in the bottom of the third thanks to a big two-out hit by Luke Notine down the right field line.  Notine also made two great plays in right field, first throwing a runner out at second base and late in the game making a great catch.  

Wasserman struck out eight in 4 and 1/3 innings of work and Hirschfeld came in to close out the game, striking out four while allowing no hits in an inning and 2/3 of solid relief.  

In earlier action, the Sharks outlasted the Plainview Hawks on Tuesday after five lead changes, squeaking out a 3-2 win at East Meadow. 

Wasserman handled the Plainview Hawks’ lineup with ease, racking up five strikeouts, allowing one earned run on four hits and no walks over five solid innings. 

Hirschfeld did a great job coming in out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and Erik Lyngstad-Hughes had a big RBI single in the second inning.   

The Merillon Sharks finally managed to grab the lead for good after a strong final inning.  Matty Heimowitz scored the winning run on a walk-off RBI single by Anthony Agerenza. Agerenza went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, leading an overall a solid team effort.
