Marjorie Baehr Hueglin, a Great Neck native and former Plandome resident, died on Feb. 6. She was 88.
Born in New York City in June 5, 1931, the daughter of Irving and Cecilia Baehr, Hueglin grew up in Great Neck, graduating from Great Neck North High School in 1947.
In 1950, while a student at Wellesley College, Hueglin became involved in Summer Theater on Lake George, where she met Karl Hueglin, Jr., a set designer. They married in the fall of the same year, and eventually settled in Plandome, where they lived for more than 30 years.
While living in Plandome, she became involved with the Democratic Party on Long Island, working her way to Town Democratic chair and ultimately making a run for North Hempstead town supervisor. In 1980, she bought Blaich Realty and enjoyed a successful career as a real estate owner/broker.
In 1991, Hueglin moved to upstate Dutchess County and purchased a historic farm property near Stanfordville. Over the next 25 years, her family says, Hueglin was actively engaged in local politics and in St. Peter’s Lithgow Episcopal Church in upstate Millbrook.
After Karl’s death in 2017, she moved to Connecticut to live with her son.
Hueglin is survived by her children Michael (Lynne), Roger (Theresa), Martha Freiberg (Dan), and Karl III, also known as “Rusty” (Leslie); a sister, Carol Baehr Ethan; nieces Willa Capraro and Barbara Ethan; grandchildren William Hueglin, Wendy Hueglin, Kathryn Nicholas (Todd), Jeffrey Freiberg (Jamie), Karl Hueglin IV (Alexis), Christopher Freiberg, Allison Hueglin, Roger Hueglin, and Michael Hueglin; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Karl, having died less than a week before Manhasset Secondary School gave his name to the Karl Hueglin, Jr. Black Box Theater. Their son Steven predeceased both his parents, having died in 1991 while undergoing experimental treatment for AIDS. In 2005, Hueglin began sponsoring a media studies internship in Steven’s name at his alma mater, Vassar College.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at St. Peter’s Lithgow Episcopal Church, 696 Deep Hollow Road in Millbrook. Visitors will gather in the Church Parish Hall following the service.
