Maragos, Winthrop host fall prevention classes

The Island Now

Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Winthrop University Hospital presented the first in a series of free classes for seniors on improving balance to prevent falls on Monday, Oct. 28. The event drew dozens of interested attendees.

Falls are the leading cause of injuries among seniors, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One in three adults over the age of 65 will fall over the course of a year, with consequences such as reduced independence, reduced mobility and fear of falling.

But many falls are preventable. With this in mind, Maragos and Winthrop University Hospital collaborated to present educational classes to seniors. Four classes in this popular free series remain and begin at 11 a.m. sharp.

“Move with the Music” on Mondays, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2., and “Be Prepared” on Mondays, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16. To reserve a spot in one of these free classes, call (516) 571-2386.

Fall injuries can be devastating to the individuals who experience them and are unnecessarily common. The CDC reports that in 2010, 2.3 million seniors were treated for nonfatal injuries in emergency rooms, leading to 662,000 hospitalizations.
