The Village of Manorhaven has enacted another moratorium temporarily prohibiting any use involving the sale of marijuana.

Last year, the village’s Board of Trustees temporarily listed the sale of marijuana as prohibited under the village code. The measure would require renewal every six months.

Village Attorney Jonathan Fielding said at last month’s meeting that the moratorium was drafted when it was thought that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2019 executive budget would include the legalization of recreational and medicinal marijuana.

The board allowed it to expire when the state Legislature did not pass any new law, Fielding said.

Now that legalization is once again reportedly becoming a priority for the governor and the Legislature the village has decided to revisit the moratorium, Fielding said.

Mayor Jim Avena, Deputy Mayor Priscilla von Roeschlaub and Trustee Rita Di Lucia all voted in favor of the law at the Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday.

Trustees Ken Kraft and John Popeleski were not present for the vote, though Popeleski did arrive later in the meeting.

No members of the community spoke during a public hearing for the law.

Manorhaven’s Board of Trustees will next meet on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.
