Readers Write: Manhasset voters send ed board spending message

The Island Now

After years of relentless tax increases, many in the double digits, which resulted in young families leaving the community, seniors losing their homes and businesses failing, the governor said, “enough is enough” and a 2 percent tax cap was enacted.

Boards of education, unions and special interest groups whined and howled, but most school administrators realized that the tax cap was permanent and proceeded to focus on improving education under the provisions of the new tax cap legislation.

Only seven districts on Long Island lacked the leadership and skill to implement the new law.

Sadly, Manhasset was one of the seven.

At a recent board meeting, board members hoped the tax-cap legislation would be abolished some day and lamented the end of tax and spend. Some parents complained that their children would be denied. Other parents asked serious questions about management. In such a large crowd, no one dared to question the morality of relentless tax increases that benefited a few at the expense of so many.

Like so many institutions throughout the country faced with similar fiscal constraints, winners adapt to the new reality and lead the way. Losers complain and whine for the good old days of “business as usual.”  Only those institutions that are led by inspired leaders and skilled managers flourish

It is time for the Manhasset School Board to show the leadership and skill for the task ahead.

If they are not up to the task, they should step aside and let others work toward the goal of developing an excellent outstanding school system.
