Some Long Island Rail Road trains were canceled and others delayed up to two hours Thursday morning after a train hit and killed a man near the Mineola station.
John Adamo of Locust Valley, 49, was hit around 7 a.m. by a westbound train from Ronkonkoma, LIRR spokesman Sal Arena said.
Service was suspended in both directions on the Ronkonkoma, Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson branches before getting back on or close to schedule around noon.
Adamo was pronounced dead at the scene, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating his death as a suicide, Arena said.
The Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson branches had service restored on one track around 8:20 a.m., and limited Oyster Bay service returned just after 9 a.m.
But delays still averaged as much as two hours on those three lines after trains started running again.
The LIRR directed commuters to the Hempstead, West Hempstead, Montauk and Babylon branches to get around the suspended lines.
Commuters on Twitter were displeased with the major delays and the LIRR’s instructions, though they acknowledged the railroad can’t do much about people getting onto the tracks.
“[C]ome on — again? This is a weekly occurrence!” Mara G wrote in a tweet.
The incident was the latest in a spate of problems that have hamstrung LIRR commuters.
A person was hit on the tracks in Westbury on Monday, and a disabled Amtrak train in the East River tunnels held up trips on Sunday.
A car crashing through a crossing gate in Westbury also caused trains to run more slowly Thursday morning, the MTA said.
