Main Branch AC fix approved by trustees

The Great Neck Library Board of Trustees on Monday approved emergency repairs to be made to the air conditioning system at the library’s Main Branch.

Although the building’s air conditioning system remains in operation, the repairs were necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the Main Branch’s six cooling units, Great Neck Library Director Jane Marino said.

“You see the temperatures so far this summer,” she said. “I don’t expect it’s going to get any better.”

During their board meeting at the Main Branch, library trustees approved $7,587 to be paid to Ronkonkoma-based Savmore Mechanical to repair two of the building’s six air conditioning units.

Marino said the repairs will entail the replacement of defective coils in one of the units and the cleaning of the condenser barrel in the other.

“The cleaning has already begun,” Marino said. “The coils are on order and we expect them soon. I was hoping to have them this week but it will probably be next.”

Work to replace the defective coils will take about a day to complete and the entire project should be finished by next week, Marino said.

The defective air conditioning units control the cooling of the Main Branch’s lower level, Marino said.

The remaining four units are fully operational and are still providing some air conditioning to the entire building, Marino said.

“The main level is fine,” she said. “One (air conditioning unit) being off is fortunately not catastrophic for the building as a whole.”
